Daughter of Jacob J. Rider & Malinda Caroline Hickman.

Married 1) Unknown Ambrose.

Married 2) James W. Withnell, about 1896.

About 101 years, 4 months old. Birth and Death dates from Social Security Administration.

-----

"Mattie" Martha Rider's first marriage was to James M. Ambrose on 13 March 1894 in Galena, Stone Co., Missouri. She gave birth to their son, Ollie Otto Ambrose on 30 August 1894 in Radical, Stone Co., Missouri. James M. Ambrose died less than a year later of the "fever" on 14 January 1895 in Stone Co., Missouri.

"Mattie" Martha Rider Ambrose remarried on 23 August 1897 to James Withnell. She went on to have at least five more children with James Withnell.

Her grandchildren remember that "Grandma Withnell" liked to play the harmonica and Jew's harp, sing hymns, quote Bible verses and sew beautiful quilts (some surviving to this day).

Grandma Withnell knew the woods near the James River- knew which herbs to pick out of the woods - which were poisonous, which were good for medicine and to eat.

Family lore suggests she was part Cherokee Indian. After much research, we have yet to find the link.

She would live to be 101 and outlive her son Ollie Ambrose.
