Velma I. Banke, age 81, of Elgin, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2001, in her home. She was born May 14, 1919, in Ft. Smith, AR, the daughter of John A. and Cora Warren Dove. She had been a resident of Elgin for over 50 years. She had been employed by the Elgin National Watch Co., and then Chicago Rawhide in Elgin before retiring. She was a loving mother to her four adopted children.
Velma was a longtime member of First Assembly of God Church of Elgin, and, a member of the Women's Aux. of American Legion Post 57 of Elgin.
Survivors include her four children, Donald Banke, of Roscoe, IL, James (Karen) Banke, of Elgin, Sandra (Craig) Grant, of Marengo, Michael Banke, of Ishpeming, MI; seven grandchildren; one brother, John L. (Phyllis) Dove, of Hampshire; one sister, Betty (Wayne) VanValkenberg, of Jasper, GA; and her life long friend, Amelia Lara, of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Leon A. Roberts.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 20, at 11:30 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with Rev. Larry Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held Monday, February 19, from 5:00-9:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Alzheimer's Research.
