Carrie Maria Merriam was born Dec. 22, 1862 in Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio. Her father was Dr. Edward Douglas Merriam. He was born Dec. 11, 1827 in Niagara Falls, Welland Co., Ontario, Canada. Carrie's mother was Phebe Ann Keyes-Merriam. Phebe was born Jan 5, 1836 in Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio. Edward & Phoebe were married May 2, 1855 in Conneaut, Ohio.

Dr. Merriam studied medicine in Buffalo, NY., when he was only 16 years old. When he finished his course, he began his practice in Buffalo in the spring of 1852. In 1853 he moved to Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio and started up his practice there. Dr. Merriam served in The Union Army during the Civil War as an acting assistant surgeon. He was the oldest resident practitioner in Ashtabula County at the time of his death in 1907.

Phoebe A. Keyes was the daughter of General Henry & Vesta Keyes, who were prominent and highly honored pioneers of Ohio.

Dr. & Mrs. Edward Merriam had four children. Two of them died in infancy, Clara & Henry. Their son Charles K. Merriam studied medicine and became a physician. He died in Conneaut at the age of thirty-five.

All that was said about Carrie in her father's obituary was: "Miss Carrie M. is an artist of some note, both in painting & music."

According to the US Census, she lived with her parents in Conneaut, Ohio in 1870 & 1880. She is shown working in Columbus, Ohio in 1890, 1891 & 1892 at the R. L. Polk & Co. Carrie married Dr. Ashley Krum June 23, 1896 in Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio.

Dr. Krum was born in Lebanon County, Pa.; His parents were George R. & Mary M. Krum. Ashley graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. He later attended the University of Berlin in 1892-93. Ashley's father, brother & sister were also medical doctors. After he & Carrie were married, he moved his practice to Erie, Pa.

After retiring, Carrie & Ashley moved to St. Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida. They lived there until they died. Carrie passed away in 1945 and Ashley remained there until his passing in 1950. They are both buried in the Center Cemetery in Conneaut Ohio, in the Merriam family plot.
