Edna Jane Willett Brooks was born in Madison County, NC to Raymond Willett and wife Elsie Carley Plemmons Willett. She was the oldest of four children born to the couple. Her siblings are the Rev. Wayne John Willett, Thenia Ann Willett Queen and the Rev. Franklin Ray Willett all of Waynesville, NC.
Mother spoke of life growing up as being that shared by many children living in rural North Carolina during the 1930's & 40's. Earning a living was hard, living off the land could have it's good and bad years, so moving around in search of a better life was common place. Mom stated that over her childhood she had lived a short time in several places including Asheville,NC when Granddad operated one of the electric trolleys which crisscrossed the city and Marion , NC where granddad was a milkman driving one of dairy milk wagons door to door. She also lived for a time in Marshall, NC. The family always returned to live the farm life in Madison County, NC after each of these ventures, living at the Bear Wallow, in the Meadows, down in the Flats, near Trust, NC or Spring Creek.
Finally, the family made the move to Haywood County, NC, where Granddad Willett was seeking work at Dayton Rubber Company. It seems that her Grandparents Millard Plemmons and Jane Condrey Plemmons often made the moves with the family as well and after a time her Grandparents joined them once again and lived out the remainder of their lives in Haywood County, NC.
It was after the move to Haywood County, NC that Edna met and married Arthur Brooks. They enjoyed a marriage of 60 years and gave birth to 6 children:
Walter Wayne Brooks, Raymond Lee Brooks, Wanda Jane Brooks Hooper, Judy Arthurine Brooks Rogers, Teresa Ann Brooks McClure and Katrinka Jan Brooks Webb, 15 grandchildren & 30 great-grandchildren.
Mother was a soft spoken , kind hearted woman, who could discipline her children just a look at her eyes. One look in her eyes and you could read every thought reflected in her soul, her pride when you were her joy, her disappointment when you let her down and her worry for you health or safety. Like many mothers during this time, mom made most of the clothes the girls in the family wore and on Sundays when attending church my sisters and I would appear in matching dresses each lovingly made and lavishly embroidered by mom‘s hand. She worked long hours providing for her family and showering each one with affection.
Mom also worked as a baker and caterer for 15 years after her children were grown. Her baked goods became well known while she baked at Barber's Apple Orchard and were shipped across the US.
She was a blessing to us all and is missed dearly.
