Elsie Latham Lee
Elsie Latham Lee, 84, a retired Great Falls hairdresser, died of natural causes Sunday in a local hospital. Her funeral is Wednesday at Westside United Methodist church.
She is survived by a daughter, Paula Wilmot of Great Falls, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.
Born Jan. 20, 1921, in Kalispell, she graduated from Flathead High School in 1939. During her high school years she was active in school music activities, including band, orchestra and choir, and played in the Kalispell Municipal Band.
She came to Great Falls to attend beauty school and married Paul Latham April 16, 1942. She lived for more than 50 years at 612 4th Ave. S.W., until illness forced her to move into a retirement home and eventually a nursing home.
She worked for a number of downtown beauty parlors, including the Paris of Montana and Frances Beauty Salon. She taught at Hood's Beauty School before purchasing the Westside Beauty Studio. She later moved the business to her westside home where she worked part time until she was 70 years old.
She and Paul had one daughter, Paula, a career reporter for the Great Falls Tribune.
Paul died 10 days before their 41st wedding anniversary. After his death, Elsie became involved in organizations for widowed persons and the Montana Senior Citizens Association. She was elected to several terms as president of Senior Citizens Association at the state and local level. She was a member of the Westside United Methodist Church.
On Feb. 28, 1988, she married Sam Lee. They spent their retirement years in Great Falls and at his vacation home at Lincoln. He died Aug. 2, 1997.
She enjoyed walking, watching politics caring for her cats and spending time at her daughter and son-in-law's cabin near Lincoln, and traveling. She visited more than 40 states, Washington D.C., Canada, Europe, Mexico, and several Caribbean countries.
For many years she battled illnesses, including multiple sclerosis, cancer and Alzheimer Disease.
Her enjoyment of music continued until her dying days. Even Alzheimer's failed to rob her of the ability to recognize songs, recall the words and sing along.
She was an inspiration to her family, caregivers and fellow sufferers for her strength and sense of humor.
