Schlegel was born at Schevarzbock, Germany and came to America in 1893.
He married Miss Amelia Bernhardt on 26 December 1906. Had he lived, they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Olney.
Survived by his wife; five sons - Wilbert, Harvey, Martin and Richard Schlegel, all of Olney; Norbert Schlegel of Meridian; two daughters - Mrs. Marvin Philipp and Mrs. Henry Seedig, both of Olney; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers and two sisters who live in Germany.
Pallbearers were his grandsons - Benny, Jerry, and Jackie Schlegel; Earl Dean and Harold Phillipp and Joe Etheridge.
