He is survived by Eloise (Kuipers), his wife of 60 years; six children, Lori, Cori, Monty, Lois, Deb, and Joni; their spouses; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and his brothers, John (Effie) Vanderbilt, age 99, and Bert Vanderbilt, age 100.
Maas served in the military in World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war, he attended Calvin College and Seminary in Michigan, where he met his wife. They went to Japan as missionaries with the Christian Reformed Church in 1955, and Maas established and pastored three churches.
In 1980, they were transferred to the Philippines where Maas established the BF Homes Christian Fellowship, a congregation in Paranaque.
Maas and Eloise retired in 1990, after which he was able to devote serious attention to his favorite hobby, golf, which rewarded him as he scored 21 holes-in-one in the next 20 years!
In retirement he also continued to assist in the ministry at Hope Fellowship in Flagstaff and at West Valley Christian Fellowship in Sun City.
Maas was beloved in every community in which he lived and served, because of his kind, caring, and giving nature. His family and friends will miss him greatly, but we rejoice that he is now seeing the Lord whom he served for all his life on earth.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 14th at 10 a.m., at West Valley Christian Fellowship (12649 N. 105th Ave. Sun City), and the burial with military honors will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on Friday, May 14th at 2:00 p.m. (23029 North Cave Creek Road, 480-513-3600).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Faith Hope and Love Ranch, an orphanage/school for abused, neglected, and abandoned children in the Philippines. Donate to Global Adventures (memo line: FHL Ranch), 4001 Osuna Rd. N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87109.
