Founder of Edison Electric Co.

John Smith Cravens graduated from Yale University in 1893, and married Mildred Myers later that year. He worked for his father-in-law, George S. Myers, co-founder of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co., until the company was sold to the American Tobacco Co. in 1900.

The Cravenses began to winter in Pasadena, Calif., in 1897, and moved there permanently in 1900 when John Cravens founded the Edison Electric Co., which later became Southern California Edison Co. He served as its president until 1901, when he resigned to found the Southwestern National Bank of Los Angeles, where he served as president until the bank merged with First National Bank in 1905. He was also a trustee of the California Institute of Technology and the Barlow Sanitarium.

In 1902, the Cravenses purchased 14 acres at the corner of Orange Grove Boulevard and Madeline Drive in Pasadena for $40,000, and built a home which was designed by architect Lewis Parson Hobart and completed in 1930 at an estimated cost of $1.25 million. The design of the home was inspired by the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, near Paris, France. The home is three stories with 50 rooms and 19,970 square feet of living space. In 1971, the home was declared a cultural heritage landmark by the city of Pasadena, and is currently the home of the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Many TV series and feature films have been filmed at the estate, which was also featured as the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Cravens died of pneumonia at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.
