MRS. CALEB FREED
Minnie Rachel Johnson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson, was born January 1, 1981, in Tarkio Township, Page County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in The Fremont Covenant Church. She married February 23, 1916, to Caleb Freed, and following that joined the Bethesda Lutheran Church with her husband. To this union three children were born.
The couple farmed several places in the county, for most of the years on Caleb's home place, southwest of Bethesda. They retired in 1961 to the home at 904 Nebraska Street, Essex. They joined St. John's Lutheran Church in 1954. Caleb died in 1967, one year after the couples golden wedding.
Surviving are her children, Lorene, Mrs. Bernard Nelson, Stanton, Iowa; Elaine, Mrs. Wayne Royer, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Leslie, of rural Clarinda, on the home place.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edwin Johnson, Essex; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, and by two brothers, Edwin and Henry, and a foster sister, Karen, Mrs. Ivan Swanson.
She died at the Hand Community Hospital, Shenandoah, Iowa, Thursday, July 1, 1976 at the age of 85.
Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran Church on July 5 with the Rev. Willard R. Garred officiating. Interment was at the Bethesda Cemetery, Bethesda, Iowa.
