CALEB EDGAR FREED
Caleb Edgar Freed was born in Page County, Iowa, October 23, 1888. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. (Louise) John Freed and was the youngest of five children in the family. He died at Clarinda Municipal Hospital Friday afternoon. He had entered the hospital Wednesday, after becoming suddenly ill.
He was baptized into the Christian faith, November 10, 1888. Later he was confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church on May 1, 1904. He attended rural schools near his home and was a resident of Page County during his entire life span.
February 23, 1916, he was united in marriage with Minnie Johnson of the Bethesda community. To their union in marriage were born three children; Mrs. Bernard (Lorene) Nelson of Stanton, Montgomery County, Iowa; Mrs. Wayne (Elaine) Royer of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Leslie, who lives east of Essex, Iowa. The family lived on the farm which Leslie now farms.
In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Freed moved to their home in Essex, Iowa, where they have continued to live. The became members of St. John's Lutheran Chruch on February 7, 1954.
Despite a serious illness about three years ago, Mr. Freed had returned to an active life. His illness that claimed his life came suddenly, because of his apparent recovery, was somewhat unexpected to those who knew him well.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elin, and one brother, Alvin.
Besides his family, he leaves to mourn his passing a sister, Mrs. Oscar (Mable) Engstrom of the Bethesda area, a brother, Gilbert, Essex, Iowa and six grandchildren. In addition there are several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran Chruch, Monday afternoon. Officiating at the 2 PM service was the Rev. Wayne Stoutenburg. Users were Ruddell Englund and LeRoy Sar. In charge of the Memory Book was Mrs. Joe Almquist. Floral arrangements were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Patterson.
