John W. Baker married Elizabeth Wood, the daughter of Texas patriot, James T. Wood. They raised several sons and daughters in San Saba County, Texas. The daughters were Ada, May,Ocie, Mattie, Lula and Bessie. Their sons were Winston, Eddie, Leone, Harry and Emmett.

John and his wife, seeking advantages for the family, decided to sell out their holdings and move to the Seattle, Washington area, making the move in the late 1880's. There they spent the rest of their lives. Elizabeth died in 1903 and John died in 1913. Both are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.
