Groton-Tracy C. Affeldt, 79 of New London Rd, died Monday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London after and extended illness

A native of New London, he was born Sept. 29, 1912, the son of Frank and Florence Banham Church and stepson of the late John Affeldt Sr. He attended the former Chapman Technical High School in New London.

He married the former Irene Esther Merritt on Jan. 28 1937, in White Plains, NY She died Aug. 17, 1991.

Before he retired in 1978, he was employed as an outside machinist at Electric Boat. He also worked as a commercial fisherman aboard the dragger Lieutenant Miner with the Stonington fishing fleet.

He was a member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society of Stonington, the social Society Froshinn of Mystic and was a longtime volunteer member of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department.

He is survived by a son, Tracy F. Affeldt of Stonington: five daughters, Constance Robinson of Roseburg, Ore., Florence E. Faria of Pittsfield, Maine, Beverly J. Holmgran of Phoenix, Ariz., Sandra Strasshoffer of Ledyard and Susan I. Davis of Groton; two brothers, Gilbert Church of Arizona and John Affeldt Jr. of Preston; two sisters, Lee Kennedy of Groton and Anne Payne of New London; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harry c. Affeldt.

The funeral service and burial will be at 11 am. Friday at the Smith Lake Cemetery. Groton. There are no calling hours.

Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl st., Mystic, is in charge of the arrangements.
