The daughter of John and Mary (VerHuel) Hoksbergen, she was born on June 13, 1916 in Pella. Henrietta graduated from Pella High School in 1934 and from a two year elementary education course at Central College in 1936. She started her teaching career at the White Breast rural school at Fifield for two years and then moved to Cedar, Iowa teaching in the elementary consolidated school there for one year.Henrietta married William DeJong on June 1, 1939. They moved to Magnolia, Iowa where William taught Physics and Math for two years and then moved to Pocahontas for a year. In 1942 they moved to Newton where William taught Chemistry and Physics. In 1965 Henrietta attended Drake University, receiving a BA Degree in Education. She spent the next several years teaching elementary math at both Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson Schools.
Henrietta was a homemaker. She joined as a member of the United Presbyterian Church in 1943, serving as a deacon, teaching children's Sunday School, and Mid Week Youth Club for many years. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Twentieth Century Club, League of Women Voters, and the Retired Teachers Association.
