"Miss Lombard Killed in Mayo, Fla., Accident"

"Miss Carol Lombard, 19-year-old secretary to Mayor Laz Quave of Biloxi, was killed in an automobile accident Sunday afternoon at Mayo, Fla. Mrs. E. J. Purvis, 48, an aunt of Miss Lombard's fiance, Robert Henley, was also killed. Mrs. Purvis and her husband, who was driving, were residents of Tallahassee, Fla. They were driving Miss Lomabard from Gainesville to Tallahassee where she planned to catch a bus to continue her trip back to Biloxi. Trooper J. R. Gamble of the Floriday highway patrol said a truck ran a stop sign at a highway intersection and the Purvis scar skidded into the side of it. Gamble said he was parked near the intersection of U. S. Highway 27 and state Route 53 and saw the accident. He said both women were dead by the time he reached them. Mr. Purvis was only slightyly hurt. Florida officers indicated the driver of the truck, Willard Douglas Picklesimer, 37, Tampa, will be charged with running a stop sign and with having improper driver's license. Miss Lombard, who lived with her parents at 410 Cedar street, went from Biloxi, Wednesday by bus for Gainesville to visit her finace, to whom she was to be married, Feb. 14 and to see the Florida LSU football game. She was a lifelong Biloxian, graduated from Biloxi High School in 1958, attended Perkinston Junior College an year and had been employed by the Biloxi mayor about six months. She was a majorette in the school band at Biloxi. She also had been runner up in the Miss Flame contest sponsored by the Biloxi fire department two years ago and was a member of Bon Vivante's Carnival Club. The body was brought back to Biloxi by (hearse) and services will be held Wednesday from Bradford Funeral Home at at St. Michael's Church. Burial will be in Biloxi Cemetery. Miss Lombard is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Lombard, Biloxi; two brothers, Gary, Mobile, and Norman, a student of Mississippi Southern College, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lombard and grandfather, Norman (Seaman). Mr. Lombard was shrimping on the Little John for the C. C. Co. at the time of the accident and did not learn about his daughter's death until he returned to Biloxi about 10 p.m. Sunday was his 44th birthday."
