Screenwriter and science fiction author. Leigh Brackett Hamilton was born and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Most of her science fiction work was in the form of short stories and novels. She was first published in 1940 with "Martian Quest." Other works published in the early 1940s included "The Stellar Legion," "The Demons of the Darkside," "Interplanetary Reporter," "Child of the Green Light," "Cube from Space," "Terror Out of Space," and "Shadow Over Mars." In 1946 she married science fiction author Edmond Moore Hamilton and they moved to Kinsman, a small town in northeast Ohio. "Lorelei of the Red Mist," a novella published by Planet Stories in 1946, was started by Brackett but finished by fellow Planet Stories author, Ray Bradbury. Brackett had taken time off from writing science fiction to work with William Faulkner on "The Big Sleep," starring Humphrey Bogart. She returned to science fiction writing in 1948 and in the next few years published "Quest of the Starhope," "Sea-Kings of Mars," "Enchantress of Venus," and "The Truants," among many others. After 1955, the majority of her writing was for film and television. She wrote or co-wrote several John Wayne movies, "Rio Bravo," "Hatari!," "El Dorado," and "Rio Lobo." John Wayne was a visitor to their home in Kinsman. She was hired by Robert Altman to write 1973's "The Long Goodbye." Before her death in 1978, she completed a first draft of a screenplay for George Lucas called "The Empire Strikes Back." Although how much of her draft made it to the final script is debated, she was given credit, along with Lawrence Kasdan, for the final script.
