Margaret Mauer, known as Maggie, was the daughter of Peter Mauer and Lucy Schick, both German immigrants.

As per the 1870 federal census census of Berlin Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, Peter Mauer and wife Lucy Schick were living in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Both Peter and Lucy are listed as having been born in Prussia. Their children:
Margaret (17), born in Kingston, New York
Jossie (16), born in Kingston, New York
The rest of the children, however, were born in Berlin Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. They are:

By 1880, Peter and Lucy are back in Ulster County, New York (as per the 1880 census).
