Born June 5, 1928, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Wilfong Sr. and Zena (Bennett) Wilfong. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gilda C. (Arbogast) Wilfong, on Jan. 31, 2001; and one sister, Betty Jean Mellett.
John served his country in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in March of 1946. He was also a lifetime member of the Good Fellowship Club and the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13. He actively supported our local community through contributions to the local police department and the VFW. He was also a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Audra W. Guest and husband Chaz, of Sedona, Ariz., and Carol J. Logan and husband Larry, of Solomons; and one son, John G. Wilfong III, of Leonardtown. He is also survived by one brother, Robert C. Wilfong, of Brooklyn; 7 grandchildren, Rebecca Watson, Beth Watson, Heather McCabe, Meghan McCabe, Holly Shirey, Chelsey Hevey and John G. Wilfong IV; 7 great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Mathew, Victoria, Lauren, Destini, Emma, and Carson; and his faithful companion, Riley.
A memorial service will be conducted in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap located at 16701 Lakeview Road NE, Flintstone, MD 21530 on Friday, May 7, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Chris Gobrecht officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
A reception will follow at noon at the Rocky Gap Lodge.
