Death Of Charles Smith
Mr. Charles Smith, one of Clark's most respected citizens died from an attack of pneumonia at his home Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. He in company with Mrs. Smith had returned but the Monday previous from a visit with their daughter at Brookings, the cause of their return being the fact that Mr. Smith was not feeling well and he naturally preferred to be at home in case of sickness. He was not considered in a critical condition until late in the week when he sank rapidly, passing away as stated.
Mr. Smith came to Clark eight years ago, and while he made his home in this city he operated a farm in Merton Township.
He was born in Carmel, Putnam county, N.Y., August 16, 1827. He moved to Wisconsin in 1848, being one of the pioneers, and settled at Scott, Sheboygan county where he engaged in farming and where he resided until comming to Clark.
He was married at Scott October 7, 1849 to Margaret Hazelton and to them were born eleven children of whom three sons and three daughters are living, namely: Dr. W.H. Bradley; J.E. Smith of Merton; H.E. Smith of Cannon Falls, Minn.; Mrs. O.H. LaCraft of Clark, and Mrs. A.W. Williams of Brookings. At the age of 15 years Mr. Smith joined the Baptist Church and for a period of over 51 years has lived a Christian life.
The funeral services, in charge of Rev. Dr. Houck were held at the Baptist church and were attended by members of Gen. Weitzel Post, Battery A, and many sorrowing friends and neighbors who gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.
The bereaved wife and other relatives can console themselves in the thought that the departed has gone to a better home where sorrow and suffering are unknown.
