Mr. Sierras retired from AFL-CIO as a staff representative. He served as president of Local #3058 Steelworkers Union, was a member of the United Steelworkers of America District #38, representative of the International United Steelworkers Association and was an organizer and lobbyist in Sacramento, California. Mr. Sierras was also the co-founder of the Council for Latino American Advancement (CLAA), a member of the Committee of Political Education and the Catholic Labor Institute, and served the mines in Silver City and Carlsbad. He was a communicant at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral.
Those left to mourn his passing include his wife, Esther D. Sierras of the family home; a son, David Manuel Sierras and wife Merry of Las Cruces; a daughter, Rita Greenough of Ontario, California; a brother, Art Sierras and wife Ruby of Whittier, California; two sisters, Helen Aloy of Phoenix, Arizona and Rosemary Tostado of Fountain, California. Other survivors include six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard Albert Sierras in 2001; a brother and two sisters.
Visitation for Mr. Sierras will begin at 6 PM Monday, May 3, 2010 in Baca's Chapel of Prayer, 300 E. Boutz Road where the Prayer Vigil is scheduled for 7 PM. Family and friends will join together to celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10 AM Tuesday, May 4, 2010 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral.
The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in Masonic Cemetery where he will be laid to rest.
Serving as casket bearers will be Steve Jarrett, Christopher, Jason, Matthew, and Tommy Sierras, and Kyle Jacobo.
