Astrid Elizabeth Gates died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Valley 4000, Woodside Village.

Astrid Elizabeth Akerberg was born to Sigurd and Siami (Suhonen) Akerberg on December 5, 1918 in Drake, ND. In 1921 the family moved to Plaza, ND where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1936.

Astrid worked at the TB sanitorium near Dunseith, ND and while there met her future husband, Moine "Sammy" Gates. They were married November 6, 1939. Four sons followed.

During WWII they both worked at an aircraft factory in Wichita, KS and then moved back to Plaza. She worked at the school lunch program and grocery store until opening her own restaurant. After her sons finished school she moved to Parshall, ND and worked at a grocery store and later at a bowling alley.

Following retirement they moved to Fargo, ND where her husband died in 1993. Astrid was very active in volunteering for Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND and other community activities until she became ill and moved to Grand Forks, ND to be closer to two sons.

Astrid is survived by sons Moine R. (Sharon) Gates, Grand Forks; Charles (Marian) Gates, Grand Forks; Kenneth (Lavonne) Gates, Florida; and daughter-in-law Irene Gates, Milnor, ND; a sister carol (John) Monson, Williston, ND: and 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grand child.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Moine "Sammy"; son, David; sister Kathrine, and brothers Arthur, William, and Elmer",

Funeral Services will be 11:00 Am Saturday, May 1, 2010 in Calvary Lutheran Church of Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery of Fargo, ND.

Memorials may be sent to Valley 4000 or Calvary Lutheran Quilting program, Grand Forks, ND.
