Josephine was the daughter of James Harwell Wilson and his second wife, Rebecca Matilda Pitts Wilson. She was born on a plantation, called Sandtown Place, by the Chattahoochee River, in Campbell County, Georgia (now Fulton County) along with her twin, Joseph Columbus Wilson of Anniston, Alabama.
