FRANK HOLMES DROWNS IN PIT

Frank Holmes, 37, of 714 E. Miller ave., drowned about 5 p. m. Saturday in a pit at the abandoned Banner coal mine six miles north of Indianola, la. He .was swimming in about 30 feet : of water.

Holmes an C. J. Smith, 804 S E. Hughes ave., went to the mine to fish. Smith drove to a phone and notified Sheriff Louis Johnson of Warren county.

The body was recovered with grappling hooks about 8 p. m. by deputy sheriffs.

Holmes, a trucker, Is survived by his wife, Agnes; four children, Arthur, 15, John, 14, DeWayne, 9, and Dianne, 2; two sisters, Mrs. Maud Kappelmann, Des Moines, and Mrs. Ed Strang, Spokane, Wash.; and four brothers, Clyde of Des Moines, Ed and Ralph of Twin Falls. Ida., and George of Portland, Ore.

Services Tuesday For Frank Holmes

Services for Frank Holmes, 37, of 714 E. Miller ave., will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Hamilton's Funeral home. Burial will be at Avon cemetery.

Holmes drowned Saturday in a pit at the abandoned Banner coal mine six miles north of Indianola, Ia., when he and C. J. Smith, 804 S. E. Hughes ave., went there to swim and fish.
