She is the daughter of Upton N. Ward and Anna Elizabeth Musselman, Eva was born 17 September 1901 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pa. In 1918 an application for marriage was made by Eva Ward and Paul James Beattie at Washington County, Maryland. Paul Beattie served in World War I, U.S. Army, as a Private, Company B, 112th Field Signal Battalion and was wounded and died at Baccarat, France on 22 August 1918, he served from 27 April 1918 to 22 August 1918, he was 21 years of age at death. His memorial #41381734 is at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chambersburg, Franklin Coounty, Penna., with his parents; Samuel F. and Mary L. (Schellhase) Beattie.

Church records for Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cumberland County show Eva gave birth to a son 4 September 1920, he was baptised "Paul Richard Ward" on 31 December 1920. Census Records 1930 Cumberland County, Pa. list Eva B. Beattie a widow and son Paul R. age 9 years living with Frank Frownfelter age 29 and his son "William" age 11 in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Penna. Eva is housekeeper, Frank is divorced employed as a General Carpenter.
