Paul C. "Spook" Dickson Sr., 87, of Grazierville died Saturday at Altoona Regional Health System, Bon Secours Hospital Campus.

He was born in Tyrone, a son of the late Warren E. and Margaret Alma (Igou) Dickson. He married Mary E. Saylor on April 3, 1947, at First English Lutheran Church, Tyrone.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Peggy Fontana of Tyrone; a son, Paul C. Dickson Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Harrison, Tenn.; a grandson, Senior Airman Vincent Fontana (Jennifer) of CAFB, South Carolina; a granddaughter, Erin Senter (Ricky) of Penrose, Colo.; two brothers: Earl S. Dickson of San Diego and Robert Dickson and wife, Judy, of Garden Grove, Calif.; two sisters: Mary L. Jenkins of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Carol D. Parham of Huntingdon Beach, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Henry Barsaloux; and four brothers: Don, Richard, Warren Jr. and John Dickson.

Mr. Dickson was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the 438th Bombardment Squadron in Sardinia, Italy, and the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and was one of two men from Tyrone to receive the Croix de Guerre (French Cross) Award, given for his outstanding part in the preparation and support of the Allied offensive in Italy.

Mr. Dickson retired in 1985 from Westvaco, Tyrone, as a finisher in the finishing room with 28 years of service. After retirement, he worked in maintenance for DelGrosso Amusement Park, Tipton, and also had worked at the original sauce plant before working for Westvaco. He previously was employed at Clyde Black Brothers as a mechanic and as a U.S. mail truck driver upon discharge from the service.

He was a member of the Blazing Arrow Hook & Ladder Company, Tyrone VFW and the Tyrone American Legion.

Paul was loved and respected by all. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his grandchildren and spending time with his dog, Beau. He loved country music and was a member of the Schoch Hollow Band, in which he played the guitar.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Feller Memorial Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the funeral home with the Rev. Norman E. Huff officiating.

Interment with veteran's honors by the Tyrone Honor Guard will follow at Logan Valley Cemetery, Antis Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018; or the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1835 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16601.
