When the family was living in Mexico Samuel "Sammy" was found on the side of the road in Colonia Morelos, Mexico where he had collapsed. He was fourteen years old and had died from pneumonia. From the autobiography by John Maurice Hinton, younger brother, who writes, "We had two ranches on the Cavellero Creek. We called them the Upper Ranch and the Lower Ranch. It was while we lived here that Morelos, Hazel, and Roxie were born and Sammy[Hinton] and Roxie died. Sammy died in Morelos of pneumonia & Roxie died on the Lower Ranch." John Samuel’s death was a great loss to the family.
