John Derrick, Aged Retired Farmer, Dies
Resident of Rock Island Taken on Eve of Wedding and Birthday Anniversaries.
Funeral services for John Derrick, 75 years old, retired Bowling township farmer, resident of Rock Island county for 52 years, whose death occurred at 7:30 o'clock, Saturday night, at his home, 1604 Twelfth street, Rock Island, will be held at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning at the First Methodist church, Rock Island. Hardening of the arteries caused his death. He had been in failing health for the last six months, being bedfast for the last week.
The service will be conducted by Rev. J.A. Chapman, pastor of the First Methodist church, of which Mr. Derrick was a member, and by Rev. S.W. Woodburn, pastor of the Gloria Dei United Presbyterian church. Interment will be in Chippiannock cemetery. The pallbearers will be Ora Heath, Robert McConnell, James McAfee and James Gilbreath of Rock Island, and Edward Love and George Liphardt of Bowling township.
Mr. Derrick had resided in Rock Island for the last seven years. He was one of Rock Island township's most progressive farmers. His genuine interest in agriculture brought him success. He started farming in Bowling township, when he became a resident of Rock Island county in 1875, and continued until 1920, when he retired and moved to the city of Rock Island.
He was born, March 7, 1852 (1851) in Bristol,(Wrington, Somerset) England, the son of George and Jane (Tidball) Derrick. He was reared and educated in his native country and came to the United States in 1871. Settling in Chicago, he resided there for three years and after his marriage moved to Rock Island county. On March 6, 1875 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Hodson in Chicago (Downers Grove), and the widow survives. The couple would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary yesterday and Mr. Derrick would have been 75 (76) years of age today.
Surviving with the widow are six children. The children are Mrs. Edith Cox, Necedah, Wis.; Mrs. Mae Johnston, Rock Island; Mrs. Bertha Schafer, East Moline; Mrs. Pearl Thuren, Sherrard; Lester Derrick of Bowling, and Miss Clara Derrick, at home. Seven grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Maude Fry, a daughter, died in Rock Island in 1919. The body was taken to the home from the Knox mortuary in Rock Island yesterday.
