He was a sugarcane farmer in southern Louisiana, and the owner of the plantation Shadows-on-the-Teche, also known as The Shadows. He never lived in this house, as it was not completed until 1834 while he was in Connecticut seeking medical attention for an unknown illness. On August 25, 1834, he died in Connecticut, having never lived in the "New House". He was buried on August 26 in Grove Street Cemetery.
