Lewis served his country as a Sergeant in the Headquarters and in the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 33rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, United States Army during World War II.
He enlisted in the Army on August 28, 1946 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was discharged from the Army on December 22, 1947 at Camp Stoneman, California.
He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on March 7, 1967.

Spry, March 4 Lewis H. Clewell, husband of Mrs. Delores J. Kornbau Clewell, died early today at his residence, York R. D. 2. He was 39.
Born in Yoe, son of Mrs. L. Mae Smith Clewell, Yoe and the late Robert Clewell, he formerly resided at Winchester, Virginia.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Dallastown. A Thirty-second Degree Mason, he was a member of Winchester Hiram Lodge 21, Free and Accepted Masons: Winchester Commandery No 12, John Dove Chaper 21, Royal Arch Masons; Acca Temple of Richmond Va., and was an advisory council member of the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay. He was a World War II army veteran and a member of Red Lion American Legion Post 543.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by 3 sons, Lewis II, Todd and Timothy; a brother Robert S. Clewell of Yoe and a sister Mrs. Thomas Butcher of Red Lion.
Funeral services were at the Austin Eberly Funeral Home, Dallastown with Rev D. Timothy Robinson, his pastor officiating. Interment to be in Gettysburg National Cemetery.
