Obituary:

Mariah Sorey, daughter of Samuel and Sallie Sorey, was born near Xenia, Ill, Oct. 23, 1849; was married to Edward E. Tadlock May 21, 1867.  To this union was born eight children, six girls and two sons.  Two girls having died in infancy.  The four girls Ella, Clara, Myrtle and Gertie and two boys, Delmar and Bert, living to woman hood and man hood, but Gertie and Bert passed on to the great beyond two years ago.

Her companion also passed away five years ago, since which time she has lived in the home of her children, being with her daughter, Clara at Benton, Ill., at the time of her death.

About thirty-three years ago she confessed her faith in Christ and united with the congregation at Bethany Baptist church in Wayne Co., III., where her membership remained until called home.  She lived a faithful christian life often expressing her desire to depart and be with Jesus and the loved ones gone before.

She was a loving mother and a true friend to humanity.  She leaves three girls, one son and eighteen grandchildren who will miss her smile and counsel, but realizing their loss is her gain.

I cannot say, I will not say
That she is dead-She is just away.

Funeral services were conducted by Eld. J. R. Kessell in the presence of a large crowd at Tennessee church and burial in the Russel cemetery.

Mariah's birth date of 21 Oct 1850 on her gravestone conflicts with other birth dates found for her.  Her obituary gives a date of 23 Oct 1849.  Her death certificate transcription at Ancestry.com lists 21 Oct 1847 as her birth date.  She is on the 1850 census as 4 years old (b. in Missouri) and the 1860 census as 12 years old.  So one of the pre-1850 dates seem to be more accurate.
