He was serving with 40 Commando Royal Marines Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl Holmes was killed in an explosion while providing protection for his patrol as they investigated a compound east of Wishtan, near Patrol Base Waterloo, in Sangin, Helmand province.

Aged 22, from Newton, Hyde, Greater Manchester. He joined the military in 2004 and previously served in Belize, Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland and Iraq. Lauded by commanding officers as a consummate professional soldier, he was regarded as exceptional leader with a promising career. Known as "Holmesy", he had many close friends throughout the Battalion and threw himself into everything he did, living life to the fullest.

Cpl Holmes is survived by his fiancée Claire Nugent, mother Beverley and stepfather David Mayall, sister Elizabeth, brother-in-law Andrew, nephew Nickolas, niece Isabelle, grandparents Jean and Frederick along with other family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Leslie, who had been a member of the Parachute Regiment.

Funeral with full military honours was held on May 27, 2010 at St Mary's Church in Newton, Hyde.
