Joseph Gray Bennett was the 5th of 7 children born to Allen Lafayette Bennett and Georgia Alva Williams. He married Laura Belle Savannah Neal Sep 2 1915 in Maxwell, OK. Together they had 8 children - 5 daughters and 3 sons. They had twins, Pearl and Earl Mar 1, 1918 - Earl died the day he was born.

Because Joseph Gray was orphaned at an early age - around 7 when his mother died and even younger when his father died, he was reared mostly by his two sisters, Aunt Frances (Fanny) Bennett Denton and Aunt Lucy Bennett Miller. He was educated by Aunt Fannie who, it is believed, had a teaching certificate. He was never healthy, suffering from rheumatism, and the family never had a great deal of money. But the children all had a good moral upbringing with the Golden Rule instilled in each of them by a father who read the Bible constantly and could quote any verse therein upon request. Their living was made by farming the land.
