Baker attended school at Loving, received bachelor's and master's degree at Texas Tech. He received his doctorate from the University of Texas.
He served in the US Army during World War II. He retired as the chair of the foreign languages department at Lubbock Christian University. He was a member of the MLK Blvd. Church of Christ and longtime volunteer at the Lubbock Coalition for LIteracy.
Survived by one brother - William Baker of Whitewright.
