Lexington, TN - Resident of Lexington, TN, Almeade Johnson could measure his life in the Henderson County city in decades. Mr. Johnson spent decades married to the same woman, decades as an insurance agent and decades as a well-liked man in Lexington, about 110 miles northeast of Memphis.
Mr. Johnson died Wednesday of cancer at his home. He was 81.
Lexington Mayor Bennie Scott said he bought his first automobile insurance from Mr. Johnson and knew him as a friend for about 30 years. "He was very, very likable," Scott said.
Mr. Johnson sold insurance for Tennessee Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. until his retirement at age 67. The Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation started the insurance company in 1948, and Mr. Johnson was the insurer's first agent in Henderson County, according to his family. He was a founder and former president of the Henderson County Farm Bureau. He also was a founding director and president of the former First Federal Savings & Loan, a director of the Lexington Free Fair and a past president of the Lions Club. He also was a past member of the Henderson County school board, a founding director of the Beech River Watershed Development Association, a member of the Cheap Valley Masonic Lodge and a member of Lexington's First Baptist Church and its Jack Hay Sunday School Class.
He was married to Faye Tolley Johnson for one year short of six decades.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Lexington First Baptist Church, with burial in Henderson County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pafford Funeral Home has charge.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Johnson leaves two sons, Gerald Johnson of Bartlett and Timothy Johnson of Lexington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
