Lena Betsey (Severson) Hanson, daughter of Ole and Guri Severson, was born October 22, 1872 on the home farm in Barton Township, Carpenter, Iowa. She passed away March 6, 1955 at the age of 82 years, four months and 12 days at her home west of Meltonville.
She was baptized on December 8, 1872 by the Rev. C.L. Clausen, pioneer minister. She was confirmed on July 25, 1886 by the Rev. Johan Olsen being a member of the first confirmation class held in the present Deer Creek Church.
On June 25, 1896 she was married to Hans Peter Hanson and they established their home in Deer Creek Township where they lived until her husband's death on August 28, 1912. Two years later she and her four children moved to Northwood where they lived for the following four years and then returned to the present farm where she has since resided. Her husband and one son Mervin, who died June 23, 1929, and one sister and three brothers have preceded her in death.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. Erving (Gilma) Hendrickson who lives northwest of Meltonville, Roy who lived at home, and Alfred who lives near Northwood, and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Sam Severson of Carpenter and one sister, Mrs. William Kuntz of Northwood. An uncle, George Colbertson of Albert Lea, Minn., also survives. Other relatives, neighbors and friends also mourn her passing.
