His death is recorded in the History of Ezra Lodge #67 as follows: "Now, alas! James Henry Wingate, a Charter MEmber and son of the Tyler (Owen Wingate), who had served the lodge for a number of years as Treasurer, passed to the spirit world August 23, 1882, and was laid to rest in Thomas Creek Cemetery, Duval County, FLorida, with Masonic ceremonies at the grave side by Ezra Lodge. This was the first death among the members of the new Lodge."
