Son of Ferrante Orsini, Duke of Gravinia, and his wife Maria-Giovanna Frangpani della Tolfa. His birth name was Pietro Francesco. He was the third and last member of the Orsini family to become Pope.

He was named Cardinal-Priest of San Sisto on 22 February 1672, later he was Bishop of Manfredonia, Bishop of Cesena and then Archbishop of Benevento. He became Pope on 4 May 1724 and served until his death in 1730.

In 2012, the process of beatification was opened in Rome. He has the posthumus title 'Servant of God'.
