“Sarah was widowed in 1832, in her late twenties, with two very young sons, ages 2 and a newborn. The Nickel family apparently helped her, as she seemed to live in the same counties as the family moved out of PA. In 1839, she married Robert W Bollen/Bolin (he was 10 yrs her junior). Since she was a woman alone and with children.
Robert and Sarah had a son, Thomas, in 1840 and a daughter, Sarah Jane, in 1842. By this time, her parents and brothers had already moved (mid-late 1830s) to MO. Sometime in the mid 1840s, Sarah and Robert joined the rest of her family in Dade Co, MO.

From what information I have been able to piece together, it appears that Robert was a gambler, and Sarah had brothers and a father that owned land (money). I imagine this is why he married her; he wouldn't have to work and her family was going to make certain that she and her children were cared for. There would always be money. Robert Bollen, apparently would be gone for periods of time, especially when he enlisted to serve in the Mexican War in the late 1840s. In Oct. 1853, Sarah filed for divorce, on grounds of desertion. The divorce was final in Oct 1954.”
