On May 13, 2009, Vernon Ray Rhodes, age 78, was called from this earth to be at home with the Lord. He was born February 25, 1931 in Scotts Hill to Opal and Monnie Rhodes, and graduated from Lexington High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Edalene Jowers in August 1949. Vernon's lifelong love of music eventually led to him becoming one of the founding partners of Rhodes Music Center in 1963. In 1964, he and his wife became sole proprietors of the store, which later became Lexington's Curtis Mathes encompassing over 25 years. A dedicated public servant, Vernon also worked with the United States Postal Service for 24 years, retiring in June 1991. For five decades with the Lexington Lions Club, Vernon promoted a spirit of service for his community, and recognized by his receipt of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. A member of the Second Baptist Church since the early 60's, he served as a deacon since 1981 and as a song leader for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Brundell and one grandson.
Along with his wife of over 59 years, Edalene Rhodes, he leaves a son, Larry and wife Denise; a daughter, Teresa Grimes and husband Johnny; and three grandsons, Dusty and Chuck Grimes and Shane Rhodes, one great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 16, 2009 in the chapel of Pafford Funeral Home with Bro. Arnold Cook, Bro. David Buffaloe, Bro. Wesley Woods and Rev. William Jones officiating. Burial followed in Henderson County Memory Gardens.
