Childhood & Adult:
"Nell went to the 7th and 8th grades at the same time. She never went out for recess or lunch, she was always working on her lessons. Nell was the only person in Schuyler County to attain 100% on the test to certify her passing the grades. Nell was a writer and dreamer. She loved animals. She enabled the boys of the family to come to Chicago and make a better life for themselves. She entered a contest in 1923 and wrote a screen play for the wife of Hugo Ballin. She won the contest, the prize being $1,000.00. The play was made into the movie "Married People". She purchased 2 apartment buildings (4 story buildings with 4 flats on each floor) on Oakenwald Ave., in Chicago with the winnings. She proceeded to decorate her flat. Better Homes and Gardens came out three times to see it. Oakenwald was the east most street with only the Illinois Central Tracks between it and Lake Michigan. Nell lived on the 4th floor and had a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. She had a way with words. She wrote to famous people and they wrote back. She received an invitation to President Carter's Inauguration. She wrote to Rosalind that it was too cold in January, but perhaps she would come in the Spring."

"Married People" Release Date: 1922. Cast: Percy Marmont, Hugo Ballin, Mabel Ballin, Ernest Hilliard, Dick Lee.

"This film from producer/director Hugo Ballin was based on a story by stenographer Nell Marie Dace, which won a Chicago newspaper contest. When Robert Cluer (Percy Marmont) marries Dorothy, a country girl (Mabel Ballin -- for those who can't guess, she's the director's wife), he encourages her extravagance. Unfortunately, Dorothy adapts to her more sophisticated life a little too well and the couple start to argue about it. Then Dorothy has an affair with a certain Lord Cranston (Ernest Hilliard) and it looks like divorce is on the horizon. Robert goes to the country and Dorothy is on the verge of running off with Cranston. But when she shoots an intruder and discovers it's a little boy (Bobby Clarke), it awakens her very latent maternal instincts. She takes the boy from his sordid life and adopts him. Robert, realizing that his wife has finally changed her ways, reconciles with her."
