Joseph Hoy Dodd, Jr. (also known as 'Red'), 74, was born in Avon VA, and passed away in Roseland VA, on April 8, 2010. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, the former Lucille Elaine Tremblay; his parents, Joseph Hoy, Sr., and Ethel Henderson Dodd; his sister, Jane Brown: and his daughter, Kathleen Frances Miller. Joe was a fine example of the ethical training offered by the prestigious Miller School of Albemarle, and he retained close ties with his classmates all his life. Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had served in Korea and Viet Nam. He was a helicopter mechanic in the service and continued his innate ability to repair anything mechanical and was also a competent carpenter and inventor. Joe was devoted to improving his mind and education: He graduated from Florida Community College; took and taught mechanics and engineering courses; studied and worked hard to become a 33rd Degree Mason, and was active in Ionic Lodge No. 101 F. & AM, of Jacksonville, FL. Joe was an excellent ballroom dancer, and frequented most of the ballrooms in the Jacksonville area. Indeed, he met many of his closest friends at dances, including his first and last wives. He was an active and enthusiastic member of the German American Club and very much enjoyed the companionship of its members. He'll be long-remembered for taking photos of the members and guests in their ballroom finery and thoughtfully presenting them with prints at the next dance. Joe was always kind, generous, loving and outgoing. He was a 'man's man,' and never met a stranger. Above all else, he loved his eight children and enjoyed visiting with them as much as possible. Survivors include his loving wife of 14 years, Virginia (Ginger) Collins Dodd; three sons: William Richard Dodd, James Joseph Dodd (Caroline), and David Gerald Dodd (Coleen); four daughters: Mary Ellen Cameron, Theresa Ann O'Leary, Janice Lynn Dodd, and Valerie Jo Robbins; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Homer William Dodd of Richmond, VA, Alexander Dodd of Texas; one sister: Joyce Anne Tuel of Gordonsville, VA. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 14 at 11 AM at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 11924 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32223. Interment will follow that afternoon at 2PM at the National Veterans Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville, FL.
