Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being mustered into that rank on September 1, 1862. He was mortally wounded on the 1st Day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1, 1862) and died in a field hospital the next day as the battle raged.
