Son of Neta Drake and William Jones.

He entered military service on 23 Jan 1943 at Camp Croft, SC, and was assigned to the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), 11th Airborne Division. He received training at Camp Mackall, NC, and Camp Polk, LA, before debarking by ship on 8 May 1944, from California to New Guinea. The 511th PIR was involved in numerous battles during the Leyte Campaign in the Philippines from November 18 to December 27.

The WWII Casualty Record reflects that Trooper Jones died of wounds sustained during one of those battles. Following is an article from the Greensboro Daily News (Greensboro NC), February 20, 1945:

DIES OF WOUNDS

Mrs. Neta Hipp, Greensboro, route 1, has been notified by the war department that her son, Pfc. William W. Jones, 21, died December 26 of wounds received in action on Leyte. Private Jones was serving as a paratrooper with the 11th airborne division. He entered service in January 1943, and went overseas in May 1944. He is survived by his mother, a sister, Mrs. Gladys Robbins, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Drake, all of Greensboro, route 1, and a brother, T/Sgt James W. Jones, serving with the Eighth air force in England.



NOTE: Private First Class Jones was originally interred elsewhere, possibly in the Philipines. His burial here occurred in 1948 as evidenced from a short obituary notice in the Greensboro Record, September 3, 1948.
