Volney was the son of John Milton and Tizrah(Day) French. He came to Wisconsin in 1844 to Dodge Co. then Fort Winnebago in 1847.He married Mary Gamble October 28th 1856 and moved to Buffalo in 1859. He enlisted Feb.1864,in Co.C
36th Regt.Wis.Vol.Infantry.,under Captain George Fisk.Was disabled and sent home May 6th 1865. They had 11 children,
Florence dieing age 7,Mary Etta married Allen Ramsay, Margaret Ellen married Almon Morgan,Elsworth died age 2,Volney V.died 1 month old,James E.married Minnie VanBrunt,
Lillian married Clarence Cease,Florence married Abel White Betts,Volney Vaness Jr. married Susie Smith, and Melvina married Parker Cease then John Collins.
