He married Rosa Hannah Rometsch on 20 April 1882 at Fremont, Dodge Co., Nebraska.
According to his children, he migrated to the United States in about 1880-1881 traveling by boxcar and bringing with him a horse and some farm equipment for his sister and brother-in-law, anna and John Knechtel. John was an apprentice shoemaker according to the 1871 census, Wellesley Twp., Waterlook Co., Ontario, Canada, page 7. He engaged in farming after coming to the United States.
Shortly after his marriage, he and Rosa settled in Saunders Co., Nebraska. They at first rented near Colon and later owned 80 acres about 4 miles east of Colon. The family moved to Waco Twp., York Co., Nebraska in about 1896. John was naturalized in York County on 12 June 1905, his intention filed either in Dodge of Saunders County.
He served on the board of the York County Commissioners and the Waco Twp. Board. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church at Waco, Nebraska.
His farm was located in Section 31, Twp. 11, Range 1, York County, Nebraska. They lived there until retirement when they moved into York in 1922. A small house, located on the farm, was moved to 19th and Grant in York and became their home.
