According to "Genealogy of the Brownings in America from 1621 to 1908", compiled by Edward Franklin Browning, John was a son of Francis Browning and Elizabeth Lloyd Browning. However, so much in this book is in error that further research has been done and much in this claim is questionable. To state who John's parents actually were has not been proven with good genealogical evidence yet and may never be.

What we do know comes from court records in Caswell County, North Carolina and in Greene County, Georgia. John's will names nine children: Frances Browning, John Browning, William Browning, Anna Bird, Phebe Boring, Siney Fuller, Clara Haralson, Millicent Wright and son Joshua to whom John gave one dollar. He also names wife Susannah to whom he left all his property including his plantation, a feather bed, a bay mare, and furniture. After her death, the plantation was to go to son William and the remainder of his property to his other children. John also left Susannah a slave named Jack. In Susannah's will, she stipulated that her faithful and trusty servant, Jack, should have his freedom.
