Newton W. Guttery, Corp. Co. L, 56th Battalion Alabama Partisan Rangers. Was originally Company A, 13th Battalion Alabama Partisan Rangers (Hewlett's Battalion) and later Co. H, 22nd Tennessee Cavalry in November 1863. He was captured at Big Shanty, Georgia, age 21 years and held as a POW at Rock Island, Illinois.

In the 1867 Voting Registration Loyalty Oaths, taken 16 July 1867, Newton W. Guttery indicated he was born 16 March 1844 in Walker County, Alabama. This is one year different than what is on his gravestone.
