from the 1878 Combination Atlas Map of Boone County:

The subject of this sketch was raised as a farmer, and throughout his life has been engaged in that occupation. He was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Lockridge February 18, 1851, and by this marriage is the father of eight children, as follows: William H., born January 28, 1852; James A., April 18, 1853; Eve E., December 3, 1854; Francis M., December 26, 1857; Viola J., December 27, 1863; Oliver W., April 15, 1868; Lucinda R., August 28, 1871 and Georgianna A., April 8, 1876, all of whom are living. Three of the number are married, and have homes of their own, presented by the father, in the immediate vicinity of the homestead.

Mr. Bowman is one of the "self-made" men of our day; indebted for his prosperity to no one but himself and his indomitable perseverance. He began life at the age of twenty-one years absolutely penniless, and even the ax with which he cleared his first ground was purchased on credit! By honest industry and prudent management, he has risen, step by step, and is now one of the largest land-owners in his township. His farm is regarded as one of the finest in Boone County, and he feels a commendable pride in its cultivation.

He has never been an aspirant for political honors, although a life-long supporter of the principles embraced by the tenets of the Democratic party, and a zealous advocate for its success.

Both himself and wife have been constituent members of the Christian Church, and in all the walks of life have proven themselves worthy members of the Church.

Mr. Bowman is one who has ever retained the confidence and respect of his acquaintances, and is universally regarded as a man of irreproachable integrity and a valued citizen.
