Southeast students, staff mourn loss of teacher

By Rachel Brown

There's been a hole at Southeast High School since 24-year English teacher Leisa Smith passed away on Tuesday.

Sherrian Hall, a recently retired English teacher from Southeast, said Smith was "one of the most positive, uplifting people" she'd ever met, someone who was "very full of the joy of life and love for everyone," and someone who thought of her students as her children.

"The students will be very affected," Hall said. "It really just shocks everyone, and I guess it makes us all realize how fragile life is."

Smith was 46. An adviser for the Raider Review student newspaper, she was also a Sunday school teacher and youth worker at Zion Hill Baptist Church, where her husband Ronnie is the pastor.

Gary Otts, a retired assistant principal from Southeast, said he remembers Smith's enthusiasm when she came to the school as a new teacher.

"She was jolly, good-natured, always wanting to do a real good job," he said.

Smith's class Web page describes her love for the school and her passion for English.

"I love, love, love teaching English ...!" she wrote. "I am proud to be a part of the Raider Nation. There is no better high school in Georgia!"

According to the school's Web site, her hobbies were reading, watching Raider football, watching HGTV and doing home projects, church activities, and hanging out with her family. She graduated from Rhea County (Tenn.) High School and received her undergraduate degree from Tennessee Tech University.

Funeral services will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Southeast with the Rev. Bob Bagley and the Rev. Scott Crow officiating. The family will receive friends at Shawn Chapman Funeral Home in Chatsworth today after 4 p.m.
