Nathan "Nate" Berry, 76, of New Britain, died Saturday, (November 4, 2000) at New Britain General Hospital. Born in Saluda, SC, he lived in New Britain since 1946. A graduate of Newberry High School in Newberry, SC, he was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving the European Theatre. He graduated from Hillyer College (now the University of Hartford), and operated Nathan Berry Accounting Services. He also did extensive work at the New Britain Probate Court under Judges Gwiazda and Januszewski. An avid sportsman, he was an active member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in New Britain, and served as church treasurer for 27 years. Nate was a corporator of New Britain General Hospital, and was also active at the New Britain YMCA and the New Britain Boys & Girls Club. Surviving is his wife, Eleanor (Futterleib) Berry; three sisters, Lila Mae Werts and Gaynelle MacFarlane, both of Newberry, SC, and Otha Schumpert Smith of Prosperity, SC; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens, Newberry, SC.
