Gloria Wood was born into a musical family. Her father was Robert E. Wood, a Boston radio singer in the 1920's, who with wife Gertrude Anderson-Wood, were the influence which pushed Gloria into singing, straight out of high school in 1941. Gloria's sister, Donna Wood, who sang with both The Horace Heidt Orchestra & The Kay Kyser Orchestra, sadly passed away in 1947 of a heart ailment at just 29 years old. By 1946, Gloria had became the resident female singer with Kay Kyser & his Orchestra , where she recorded the classic 1947 hit , ON A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA with vocalist, Harry Babbitt. Also, while with the Kay Kyser Orchestra, she recorded the novelty tunes: WHEN VERONICA PLAYS THE HARMONICA, THE WOODY WOODPECKER SONG, PASS THAT PEACE PIPE, CINCINNATI, & several others. A few years later, Gloria made a very good living using her extraordinary 4 1/2 octave voice in film & TV jingles.
Unfortunately, the only other song that Gloria is famous for is the novelty song 'Hey! Bell Boy'. Gloria is quoted as saying.... "I like making money," she admits. "But I'd like to be known for all the things I've done. Nobody knows Gloria Wood."
Gloria passed away on March 4,1995 from complications of Diabetes. At that time, she was known as Gloria Wood-McGeorge.
No mention of her career as a vocalist is made on her headstone, it simply says BELOVED WIFE.
